What I do.

"What do you do?" Upon being asked this question, a person of my persuasion is faced with a social quandary: does one offer up a quick and neatly meaningless job title, a description of the means by which one procures "a living", thus satisfying the informational and timely needs of the questioner? Or does one embark on a lengthy and poetic description of the means by which one feels alive? As I desire to waste neither your time nor your attention span, feel free to skim this page for the answer that best suits your particular purposes. Or, um, not.

Personal photoHow I make a living. I am currently working in web development as well as designing and editing a few workplace publications. I am relatively new to Web design, having begun with HTML in 2007 and building from there, but hey, I'm working full time and have steady pay and employment, so I must be doing something right. I have to say, I love it - the fusion of the analytical and logical world of code with the aesthetic realm of design is wholly satisfying. Plus I get to expand my inner geek, of which I take full advantage at every opportunity. I am beginning to build a client base and portfolio for some extra side work, so if you're interested, contact me. And if this doesn't work out, there's always busking...

Studying. Currently studying herbalism with both Sacred Plant Traditions in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as Christopher Hobbs' Foundations of Herbalism distance learning course. To follow my studies, check out my Earth Kind Herbal learning blog.

MamaRouxMusic!!! I am a trained singer specializing in jazz, blues, and folk vocals. Most recently, I performed as vocalist with the Richmond-based Turko-Balkan ensemble Balkanize!, singing in over a half-dozen different languages, beautiful rhythms, and evocative melodies. I've also sung at numerous street corners, open mics, cafes, gutters, and campfires all across this great land. In 2006, I sang with Samson Trinh's Upper East Side Big Band for the notorious Nouvelle Burlesque performances. Which brings me to...

Theatre. Actor, director, producer, writer, fight choreographer, and glorified go-fer. In 2007, I acted in my first film, Stormcatcher Films' production of Keepsake, an independent horror flick, recently accepted into the Screamfest film festival. In 2006, I created the Nouvelle Burlesque troupe, writing, directing, and performing (as MamaRoux) in the highly successful Deshabiller show in July, as well as the New Year's Eve show, both at the Sycamore Rouge in Petersburg, Virginia. Prior to that, I participated in numerous theatrical productions in both Richmond and Charlottesville. To sum up, theatre is both my greatest love and the biggest damn headache money can buy.

Art. Yep. I like getting my hands dirty. For fullest coverage, I prefer charcoal. For that special smelly I've-been-working-in-the-woods-and-there's-dirt-down-my-shirt feeling, I enjoy sculpting with grapevine. It's bendy.

Writing. Poetry, essays, stories, articles, and erotica. Par example:
